Neuroscience Can Change Architecture Forever:

Carlotta Zanoli, Juan Carlos Baumgartner

1. Introduction: Neuroarchitecture

More and more often we hear about neuroarchitecture, but what is it about, how does it work and why should it be taken into account? Neuroarchitecture, a term that derives from combining the field of neuroscience with the field of architecture, is the discipline that pursues the design of efficient spaces by studying the relationship between human health and the built environment with the help of neuroscience. It studies the impact that architectural elements have on people's emotional and physical health, in addition to technical parameters such as regulations, ergonomics and environmental comfort, neuroarchitecture focuses on emotion, happiness and the many different ways the brain responds to different spaces.

Artists and architects always instinctively knew that our surroundings have the ability to influence us, it was no secret that our immediate environment affects our mood and even our mental health. There wasn't really a word for it before, but in recent decades, the new cutting-edge field of neuroarchitecture has emerged, a whole discipline that measures human reactions to the environment and seeks to understand the reasons behind the reactions through the study of brain chemistry.
